How to make a bug hotel

From providing services like pollination and pest control, to breaking down fallen leaves and dead wood into soil, bugs and other insects are an important part of the ecosystem.

Unfortunately, these amazing little critters are in decline in the UK. But there is lots that YOU can do to give these amazing creatures a helping hand. One of the ways you can make your patch a haven for bugs, bees and other insects is by making a bug hotel.

Stuff you’ll need:

• Dry sticks or twigs
• Hollow stems like old bamboo canes or rolled newspaper straws.
• Blocks of wood
• Dry leaves
• Corrugated cardboard
• Straw and hay
• Loose bark

Equipment:

• Scissors.
• Waterproof tape or string.
• An electric drill (optional and with an adult to help).
