Make a pumpkin bird feeder this Halloween!

Did you know that more than 12 million pumpkins will be left wasted this Halloween! We think that’s scarier than any monster, ghost or haunted house!  👻

Once Halloween is over DON’T throw away your carved pumpkin. Give it new life by transforming it into a brilliant bird feeder! 🎃

Now the weather’s getting cooler it can be difficult for birds to find enough to eat, making it harder for them to keep healthy and warm. You can give them a helping hand by providing them with plenty to eat on your patch. 🐦

Our brilliant partner RSPB has lots of other great ideas to help you make the most out of your pumpkins this Halloween. Check them out here.

Stuff you'll need

  • Small to medium sized pumpkin
  • Small sticks
  • String
  • Birdseeds

Steps

  1. Cut off the top of the pumpkin (get an adult to help you with this).
  2. Scoop out the seeds.
  3. Fill the pumpkin with birdseed.
  4. Put two sticks into the side of the pumpkin to make a place for birds to sit.
  5. Tie two pieces of string together in the middle, lay them out in an ‘X’-shape, rest your pumpkin on the centre of the ‘X’ and tie the ends of the string (see the video below which will show you how).
  6. Hang up your bird feeder (hang it high from the ground to keep it out of the way of other animals).
